    PROGRAM OVERVIEW
 

Building on long-standing strengths in Chinese language instruction and strong faculty ties with Fudan University, the Washington University Summer Chinese Language Program at Fudan University in Shanghai offers a unique curriculum that allows students to make significant advances in Chinese language proficiency. In partnership with Fudan University’s School for Social Development and Public Policy and Center for American Studies, the Summer Chinese Language Program at Fudan University is a highly intensive language program and requires students’ full participation at all times. This program is seven weeks of full immersion in the Chinese language with small group intensive instruction.
 

WU Summer Chinese Language Institute Handbook

 
Eligibility: 3.0 GPA Minimum. Two or more semesters of college Mandarin Chinese. B- or above in all Chinese language courses. Heritage speakers without prior language instructions are also eligibile to apply.

Coursework: You will earn a total of 8 WU Chinese language credits, which is the equivalent of one complete year (two semesters) of language study at WU. 

There are three different Chinese language levels offered: 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year.

Good performance in the course requires effective previewing and reviewing of the vocabulary and the grammar patterns, punctual attendance and active participation in class, listening carefully to recordings, and completing assignments with good quality. Attendance, participation, homework, quizzes, etc. are recorded on a daily basis. The language pledge in the classroom and in program-related activities is strictly enforced in order to maintain total immersion in the Chinese language. 
 

    LOCATION
  Shanghai, China: Shanghai is the largest city in China in terms of population and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with over 20 million people in its extended metropolitan area.

Courses will be based at Fudan University, one of the oldest, most prestigious and most selective universities in China.
 

    STUDENT LIFE
  Housing: Students will live in dorms, among both American and Chinese students. Students are responsible for purchasing their own meals.

Student Life: Students pledge to only speak Chinese, especially in academic situations. Each student will be paired with a Chinese college student as a Language Partner. There will also be a week of domestic travel in China, along with weekend trips and activities, the cost of which is covered in the tuition.

On-Site Support: A Washington University on-site Resident Director provides academic and co-curricular support, organizes excursions and coordinates housing arrangements. 
 

    OTHER INFORMATION
  Estimated Summer 2016 Program Price: -$7,900 + $160 visa fee + $85 approx. insurance- includes eight (8) WU academic credits, housing, language partner, WU sponsored weekend trips and activities, on-site coordinators, on-campus internet, Chinese visa, and mandatory International health insurance. 

Students are responsible for own airfare, daily meals, public transportation, laundry, and purchase or rental of a cell phone.  WU will facilitate the visa application process.

Scholarships: WU in Shanghai Summer + Fall Scholarships available to students studying consecutively for both summer and fall semesters on the WU in Shanghai and WU Summer Chinese Language Institute in Shanghai programs.
