This budget sheet is for fall 2023. All costs are subject to change in accordance with university fee increases, exchange and inflation rates, and variations in individual travel, housing, and spending habits. The semester prior to studying abroad, students will receive a Program Agreement outlining exact costs that are to be billed through WashU.

Billable Costs
The "billable subtotal" above lists the charges that are paid to WashU through WebSTAC.
  • WashU Tuition: Since the students who are participating in the program will be fully enrolled at Washington University and receive WUSTL credit, they will be charged regular WUSTL tuition for participation in the program. The tuition bill will come from WUSTL's Student Accounting Office during the normal billing cycle for the semester. Please review the Tuition Policy for further details. 
  • Estimated Housing: DIS will bill Washington University in St. Louis directly for the housing fee. The DIS housing fee includes: a furnished room, local transportation between DIS and student housing, meals or partial food stipend, laundry facilities or allowance, airport pick-up, Arrival Workshop, visa assistance and advice, 24-hour emergency support, cultural and social events, Housing & Student Affairs advising and support and Pre-departure support.
  • Estimated Residence Permit for DIS: DIS will bill Washington University in St. Louis directly for the residence permit fee. DIS staff will assist you with this process during Arrival Week.
Non-billable Costs: Additional Estimated Expenses
The "non-billable subtotal" above lists additional estimated expenses a student may incur to participate in their program. This is intended as a rough guide for planning and is not all-inclusive.  Actual costs will vary depending on many factors that are determined by personal spending habits, housing selection, and other preferences. The cost estimate above does not include personal expenses or independent travel, which vary widely from student to student. Students should also budget for unforeseeable expenses. 
  • Estimated Meals: An approximately $600 food stipend is provided towards all non-host family students’ grocery costs. Students typically report spending $400-$550/month in addition to the food stipend. Estimate is less for Homestay students. For additional details see the DIS Housing section.
  • Estimated Books & Supplies: DIS housing fee covers books.
  • Estimated Local Transportation: DIS housing fee covers transportation pass that covers the length of your daily commute from your home to DIS.
