The main focus of this project is to explore the difficulties of policy implementation and future policy change.

Description: Deyu Zhao, Associate Professor, obtained his Doctorate Degree from the School of Economy and Management in Shanghai JiaoTong University in 2004. His dissertation title is “Political economy of dominant ideology and policy change” which was published in 2005 (awarded the 5th Hu Sheng Youth Academy Nomination prize). He spent one year as a visiting scholar in Washington University in St Louis in 2010, and he is also the author of “The Logic of Policymaking Experience and Interpretation” and “Public Policy: Community, Instruments and Process” and many of his articles have been published in top Chinese academic journals such as
Sociology Research,
Management World,etc. At present, he is conducting important research on “History of China’s Grain Policy: 1949-2008” (supported by National Social Science Foundation). His research area is concerned with the theory and methodology of policy science and its applications to many social issues including health care, the aging and social security policy, immigration reform, etc.
PRACTICUM DETAILS
Language Requirement: Mandarin Chinese (not required, but preferred)
Possible Projects: Family Doctor Policy Research; Rural Migrant Health Related Research (additional projects depending on Professor Zhao’s current research)
Preferred Knowledge and Background: Qualitative and Quantitative Research Skills, Community Mobilization, Health Behavior Communication, Education and Training
Cost: Students are responsible for flights, housing, potential visa fees, and living expenses. Reasonable housing and living expenses costs approximately $20-$50 a day in Shanghai. Students who choose to live in the Tonghe International Student apartment (2-3 person/apartment) will pay $20/day for housing plus additional costs for food and transportation. Students are required to purchase purchase WUSTL travel insurance for the duration of their practicum for $40/month.
Travel Immunizations or preventative medication is recommended and may be required for your program participation. Students are responsible for covering all associated costs. Please refer to the
